FIESTAS AND FOLKLORE

Lanzarote is famous for its Carnival celebrations held in February. Tinaja holds the Romería de la Virgen de los Dolores pilgrimage on 15 September. On 16 August, this town also celebrates the feast of San Roque. One of the Yaiza region’s most important fiestas is the Romería de San Isidro pilgrimage which takes place on 15 May in Uga; on 7 July, San Marcial del Rubicón celebrates the Femés and the Virgen de los Remedios is held on 8 September in Yaiza. Las Breñas celebrates San Luis Gonzaga on 21 June, and at Playa Blanca there is the fiesta to celebrate Nuestra Señora del Carmen on 16 July with a traditional sea procession.

The fiestas usually include dancing, fireworks and barbeques (the main roast dish being sardines), in which all the townspeople and those from the surroundings come to celebrate.
